Competition clubs
MidPac student symposium
Historical information: the following overview was published for MidPac 2024.
Every year ASCE student chapters from all over the world meet in their respective regions to compete in regional competitions related to the various fields of civil engineering. Sacramento is in region 9, so the ASCE student chapter at Sac State participates in MidPac for our regional competitions. Some of these competitions include Concrete Canoe, Geo-Challenge, Steel Bridge, Timber Strong, and the Water Treatment Challenge. Each competition has a dedicated club on campus that build a team for the competition. A different school hosts the symposium every year. Sacramento State will be co-hosting MidPac 2024 with University of the Pacific on Sac State's campus. Be sure to attend to support your ASCE student chapter!
What are competition clubs?
Competition clubs are exactly what they sound like. They are clubs that compete! Every competition during MidPac has a corresponding club at the schools that compete. These competition clubs put together a team to compete, help the team prepare for the competition, and support the team during the competition. Learn more about each competition club as Sacramento State down below!
COMPETITION CLUB / 01
Concrete Canoe
Test your engineering skills and abilities by building and racing a canoe made out of concrete! Students in the Concrete Canoe club have a chance to learn and gain skills through the special challenges they face designing their canoe based on specified design constraints. The hard work doesn't stop there! Students also race their canoe against other universities.

Geo-Challenge / GeoWall
Geo-Challenge, also known as GeoWall, is a competition club related to the field of geotechnical engineering that involves designing and building a model MSE, mechanically stabilized earth, retaining wall. Competing students are challenged by using limited resources, materials, and they must subject their model to a variety of load tests. Like many of the other competition clubs, the GeoWall team will both present their design and build/demonstrate their model as part of the competition.

Steel Bridge
If you are interested in structural engineering, then this club is perfect for you! The Steel Bridge competition club challenges students to design and build a bridge out of steel based on given design parameters. The skills and experience gained by being involved in Steel Bridge will be carry on into your career.

Timber Strong
Timber Strong is a new competition club to Sac State! Students participating in the club must utilize and implement both structural engineering and architecture principles to tackle the design challenges in their competition. The scoring criteria for the competition involves the structural integrity of the structure, efficiency of the construction, and the cost of materials. You could be part of the first Timber Strong team for Sac State!

COMPETITION CLUB / 05
Water Treatment
The Water Treatment challenge is a fantastic way to learn about the field of water resource engineering. Students in this club are faced with the challenge of designing, building, and demonstrating a water treatment filtrating system to treat highly contaminated water. A big part of the challenge during the competition is the limited resource they are allowed to use as well as being timed during the construction of their system.
